UWS is inviting applications from candidates wishing to carry out a PhD in a health-related area under the supervision of an interdisciplinary team of experienced researchers. Successful applicants will be based at the University’s new London Campus in the heart of this Cosmopolitan City.

The UWS London Campus offers attractive, modern facilities in close proximity to major attractions in Central London. The Campus is wifi enabled with a spacious IT lab creating an effective study environment. Our library provides a range of online resources to assist you with your studies while providing break out rooms for quiet research or to work on group projects.

 

Your research

You will join a multidisciplinary team of academic experts and researchers. Your interests will augment our research environment. You will create your own unique contribution and impact the advancement of knowledge. UWS has around 500 research students; our students come from more than 20 different countries which means that you will be studying alongside students with different backgrounds and cultures. The University has a number of research institutes and centres and you will be aligned with the Institute of Healthcare Policy and Practice (IHPP).

The University have a Doctoral Training Academy which places our research candidates at the heart of our research culture and community. The Academy  works collaboratively with Schools and other departments such as Research Services and Enterprise Services fostering strategic collaborations by combining expertise from within UWS’s centres of excellence in health, society and sustainability, and partner organisations such as the NHS, industry, third sector. A key feature of the Academy is the multidisciplinary doctoral training programme which focuses on personal development,professional development, output and impact.

The School of Health, Nursing & Midwifery will play a key role in providing you with the appropriate level of supervision and support. The School offers a wide range of research opportunities for candidates in London (and Scotland*), which are aligned to the Schools’research areas of expertise.

 

Opportunities exist to undertake research projects for the awards of Master of Philosophy (MPhil); Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Professional Doctorate.

 

Our research hub, the IHPP, is a centre of applied research excellence, advancing health and social care practice, and family caring through evidence generation, partnership working and policy influence. The IHPP also works closely with other research groupings within the University, in particular with the International Centre for Integrated Care and the Alzheimer Scotland Centre for Policy and Practice - their joint interests being strengthened by external links with health boards, local authorities, third sector and independent care providers. Research candidates will be part of the IHPP community of research.

 

Research Themes

The IHPP has two research teams;

‘Deteriorating Patient’ and ‘Improving Lives’ (which includes Mental Health and Wellbeing) with each team having a group of research themes including:

• Dementia experience and care

• Forensic mental health

• Vulnerable people

• Early recognition

• Wound care

• Nursing home practice

• Maternal health

The development of The IHPP’s Living Lab is an important component to the development of innovative research. This space is designed to be a user-centric innovation with an approach that facilitates user influence engaging all relevant partners  in real-life contexts.

 

Our Mission

In addition to developing an international reputation for producing applied, collaboratively undertaken meaningful and impactful health and social care research,specifically The IHPP aims to:

• advance the evidence base for practice and learning within healthcare, social care, family caring and integrated services using technology and innovation to improve lives

• address major public health challenges

• improve the quality and safety within interdisciplinary practice, services, care facilities (including hospitals and nursing homes and within the family home)

• inform and strengthen leadership,workforce development and interprofessionallearning for practice

• refine conceptual and methodological understandings and develop new methods to collect data aligned with our applied research agenda

• Provide a place for new researchers to grow their knowledge and experience within a team collaborative interdisciplinary framework

 

PhD Entry Requirements

Applicants for a higher degree will normally be expected to be the holder of a first or second class honours degree of a university in the United Kingdom or of the former Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), or of an equivalent qualification. It is expected that applicants will also hold a relevant postgraduate qualification and will be able to demonstrate prior experience of carrying out empirical research. If English is not the first language, applicants will be required to show competency in English, showing an IELTS score of at least 6.5 at postgraduate level with a minimum of 6 in each component.
