University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is celebrating its third year in the Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings.
The latest results have seen the University jump 12 places from joint 60th in the previous league table to joint 48th out of 98 in the UK this year.
Globally, UWS has also moved up a category and is now ranked 401-500 out of 1,258 institutions worldwide, increasing from last year’s position at 501-600 out of 1,000. This, in turn, improved on the University’s original listing of 601-800 out of 980 when it was first included in the THE World University Rankings 2017.
Amongst the performance indicators used by the THE World University Rankings, UWS ranked in the top 250 universities worldwide for citations, revealing the scope of UWS’ research influence by capturing the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally.
We are also recognised for our international outlook, which measures the ability of the University to attract international students and staff, in addition to levels of international research collaboration.
Commenting on the latest results, Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “I’m immensely proud to see UWS continue to climb the rankings, especially when we take into account the scale and global weighting of the THE World University Rankings. Furthermore, our UK position has also significantly improved, jumping 12 places from joint 60thin the last listing to joint 48th this year, which is a considerable achievement for the University.
“Our new position in the THE World University Rankings is testament to the continual hard work put in by colleagues and students across the institution, particularly with regard to the impact of our research activity and work on internationalisation, as is reflected in our top scores. THE World University Rankings are now in their 15th year, and have published a ranking of over 1,250 universities from 86 countries, making it its biggest international league table to date.
The organisation cites the rankings as the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, and are said to be the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, which are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.
