Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, hosted an informal event for Chinese students undertaking the University’s new MSc Advanced Thin Film Technologies, which was launched in September 2017.
The majority of the world’s thin film production is carried out in China and this course, which is delivered at Paisley Campus, has proved particularly popular with Chinese students.
Ten students attended this event which saw them showcase their Masters project activity with a poster display as well as share in a buffet dinner with the Principal and academic colleagues.
Professor Caspar Clark of the Royal Academy of Engineering who is a sponsored Visiting Professor at UWS was also in attendance. Professor Clark is an alumni of UWS and is the founder and CEO of one of Europe’s premier optical thin film companies, Helia Photonics Ltd based in Livingston.
Thin film technologies are key enablers in a wide range of global research, development, manufacturing, industrial and high technology applications and products. This programme develops the multi-disciplinary skills needed for professional development within this rapidly expanding field.
Professor Mahoney said: “Students are central to everything we do at UWS and it is excellent that we have a range of world-class research to which they can be exposed; our work on thin films being an excellent example. I was delighted to host this event and have the opportunity to meet these students and discuss their university experience and the benefit they will gain from their course.”
