UWS graduate Kirsty Gilmour, Commonwealth silver medallist from Glasgow 2014, secured a second Commonwealth Games medal beating Canadian Michelle Li to bronze on the Gold Coast.

24 year old Kirsty, who graduated from the Ayr Campus with a BA in Creative Industries, went into the competition as the 4th seed and is Scotland’s number one female badminton player. Gilmour put a draining last-four defeat to India’s Saina Nehwal behind her, returning to the court to beat Li 21-11 21-16.

Gilmour said: “There is overwhelming happiness and relief to be standing here.

“During the last Commonwealth Games I don’t remember analysing it as much as I did this time. This time, there was a lot of planning and preparation beforehand, because the top-four seeds are all capable of beating each other on any given day.”

Kirsty won her first senior caps at 16 years old and became the youngest badminton player to attend a Commonwealth Games for Scotland when she competed at Delhi 2010 having just turned 17. At Glasgow 2014 she became the first Scottish woman to reach a Commonwealth Games Badminton Singles final, winning silver.
