Ten computing science/IT students attended a summer school & industrial placement on 6-19 June 2016 in Nanjing, China. This is an international mobility project sponsored by both the Scottish Government and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). The project was hosted by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NUIST), the partner institution of UWS.

The summer school provided Calligraphy Art, Kungfu, Taiji, etc. classes for UWS students to learn Chinese cultures. It also invited UWS students to join the annual student conference of the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Both UWS students and NUIST students attended the conference and exchanged their study experience in China and Sctoland.

The industry placement provided an opportunity for UWS students to see a software company in China and to do a software project supervised by a Chinese expert in software development.

This project has been very successful. All of students have felt that their experience in China was amazing.

The Dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at NUIST said “UWS and NUIST have had a long term partnership and firm collaboration in both of education and research. This summer school is the second one for the two schools. This means that the two schools have a strong relationship and are willing to continue the relationship in future.”

UWS students said: “I do think this project will benefit my career. It is an amazing experience to put on my CV, which will at least give me an advantage in getting to interview. The practical side of it just showed me what is possible using these different technologies and what you can build in a short space of time. The company’s development framework was inspiring and made me want to learn more about these technologies.”  “Overall I found the trip a great learning experience and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would not hesitate to recommend the trip to anyone considering going in the future.” “This was the best choice for my summer. If I have the chance to repeat this, I would.”
